I founded ONI Systems in 1998, and by 1999 we had developed some very promising optical networking products. In the summer of ’99, I presented at a telecom conference and was approached by Anne Mitchell, a Fidelity Ventures partner. She said “We’re an important backer of leading service providers including COLT Telecom. We understand service provider requirements and could accelerate your product launch.” Things moved pretty quickly after that.
